Demolition - Railcorp
Site Name:
North Eveleigh Railyards
Client:
Railcorp
Overview:
Stripout, asbestos removal and demolition of three rail workshop and stores buildings.Summary:
This project involved the demolition of three buildings, all with different construction methods. One building was a complete steel frame including overhead crane rails, the second was a mixture of steel truss and sawtooth roof with supporting brick walls and the last was a complete timber frame.
Two main challenges were faced during the demolition:
- The sawtooth/brick building was 12m high and located only 3m from one of the busiest railway lines in the country. Demolition of the closest brick wall was carried carefully using an excavator and pulveriser following careful planning and consultation with a rail Protection Officer.
- The timber framed building was structurally unsound due to age and termite damage and also had an unsound timber floor that was required to be used as a work platform. These challenges were overcome through the use of lightweight scaffolds, asbestos cement roof sheeting was removed from underneath which was much slower but safer due to not having men working at height on an unstable structure and through the use of boom lifts working from the outside.
Specialty:
Stripout, asbestos removal, working at heights, working in rail corridors, structurally unsound buildings.
Wall near railway line.
