Demolition - Liverpool City Council
Site Name:
Liverpool Council
Client:
Liverpool City Council
Overview:
Demolition of fire damaged council chambers building.
Summary:
This project involved the demolition of the fire damaged Liverpool Council Chambers. This 5,400m2 building was damaged by fire and the majority of the structure had collapsed onto the supporting suspended slab. Ross Mitchell and Associates was contracted to complete the demolition including 500m2 of suspended mezzanine plantroom slabs without causing any damage to the suspended slab which was to be re-used during reconstruction. Demolition over a suspended slab adds an order of difficulty to any demolition project due to reduced access and the sizes of any plant that may be used, this was further complicated by the fact that the existing structure was fire damaged, predominantly collapsed and most of the remaining structure was structurally unsound and prone to further collapse.
The risks posed by these added orders of difficulty were mitigated through careful planning and thorough risk assessment processes to ensure that the work was carried out as safely as possible. The project was successfully completed without any injury to workers or damage to the remaining structure.
Specialty:
Working at heights, fire damaged structures, working on suspended slabs, backpropping.
