Asbestos and Hazardous Waste Removal - I-Inspect
Site Name:
Macquarie St Sydney
Client:
I-Inspect
Overview:
Removal of friable asbestos pipe lagging to boiler/hot water tank
Summary:
The removal of pipe lagging (insulation) is to be treated as friable as it becomes air born when handled, due to its structure.
Before any removal work were undertaken RMA built an encapsulation around the removal area. A negative air unit was then attached to the encapsulation and to run during the removal works to filter the air of any harmful fibers that may be produced in the removal process. An independent occupational hygienist was engaged to approve the work procedures and the encapsulation and to provide background air monitoring for the duration of the project.
The lagging was wet down with water before removal works began, ensuring there is no run off. The asbestos was then removed by cutting into the lagging with a Stanley knife. The removed lagging was placed into 200um thick asbestos bags ready for disposal and any remaining lagging was removed using scrapers, wire brushes, scourer pads and damp rags.
Upon completion the enclosure and surrounding area were vacuumed using a HEPA filtered vacuum followed by wet-wiping or detailing.
The hygienist then carried out a visual inspection and cleared the work area will have a paint, PVA and water solution sprayed. Clearance monitoring was put in and once a clearance certificate was issued by the hygienist the enclosure was taken down and the area may be accessed without the use of PPE.
